I'm about halfway through a manuscript about, well, all kinds of dark stuff. It's written in first person present, as if a child were sitting under hypnosis and telling you the things that she knows she shouldn't tell a stranger.
Think war, psychological operations, PTSD. The girl doesn't have much in the way of water, heat. Her veteran father who was a POW returned home and shut off utilities, in a twisted show of how he had to live.
Think the comfort brought by animals, dependent on this girl for their care.
Then...what if those animals were used...against her?
She keeps looking ahead for signs that one day she'll escape to somewhere warm, with her dog, before she's too broken.
